Not exactly DVD-related, but ¡Cuba Sí! and La Solitude Du Chanteur de Fond are both available in the web. No proper release being contemplated as far as I know. Solitude is English subbed too.

Re:
This was a good deal, but I've only received 3 or the 4 DVDs I ordered from Cineaste and they aren't returning my emails. Has anyone else received all 4? The Last Bolshevik/Happiness is still outstanding in my order.Cash Flagg wrote:Purchase the four Icarus DVDs through Cineaste magazine and save 25% here.

Re: Chris Marker on DVD
Am I right in reading that this DVD will cost $398? It does not say that this this is institutional price, and individual consumer price will be much lower.

Re: Chris Marker on DVD
Either you've read it wrong or it got changed. It currently says "This DVD is sold above for home video use only. If you require a license for institutional use or Public Performance rights, the price is $398". Above that, it says "Sale: $Please Inquire", so I presume they haven't listed it for normal sale yet or something.
Re: Chris Marker on DVD
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned La Mystere Koumiko... that film is a gem and needs to be released on DVD.

Re: Chris Marker on DVD
Savant says it's the 1993 version! If that's correct, then it's completely baffling. Surely it would make a lot more sense to include the 2008 version.

I had the same reaction, but figured that it must have been a typo.ola t wrote:Savant says it's the 1993 version! If that's correct, then it's completely baffling. Surely it would make a lot more sense to include the 2008 version.

I'm surprised that there isn't a topic for Icarus Films in the Boutique Labels forum considering their roster of filmmakers.

Re: Chris Marker on DVD
Salon's Andrew O'Hehir talks about A Grin Without a Cat, among other recent dvds.
Although Marker's French title, "Le fond de l'air est rouge," can be roughly translated as "the temperature is red," he is in no way an apologist for Soviet-style communism. He sees the great-powers conflict of the Cold War as an obscenity that twisted the genuine popular-revolutionary potential of the '60s in many evil directions. (The English title may better convey some of that ruefulness.) Perhaps it's possible, after three decades, to remove oneself from the overheated ideology of the period and see "Grin Without a Cat" as an ironic and tragic chronicle that captures many repressed moments of recent history in compelling and immediate fashion. However you want to view it, "Grin" is the ultimate achievement of an utterly unique cinematic figure, and we've been waiting for it a long time. One of the home-video releases of the year, if not the decade.

Junkopia is also available on ubuweb, in what appears to be slightly higher quality than the youtube version: http://www.ubu.com/film/marker_junkopia.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Thanks for bringing my attention to it, though. I had never heard of it before and enjoyed it immensely.
